Here’s some cool information and fun facts about Longview, Texas. Founded in 1870, the Southern Pacific Railroad brought its track into Gregg County thanks to landholder Ossamus Hitch Methvin, Sr. He convinced the railway to come to his property by selling them land on the cheap. $1 for 100 acres cheap.
When the railroad was surveying the area they took in the view from Methvin Hill by his house. The “long view” of the area coined the name.
In 1871 the town was incorporated as the first to do so in Gregg County. At first, it was a transportation hub but the city population grew rapidly in the early 1900s as crude oil was discovered.
Today, the total population of this small American city is 81,631 people.
